In the Shadow of War: State Nationalism and the Futures of India & Pakistan
On May 10, Pakistan and India pulled back from the brink of (nuclear) war. Among the many aspects of this recent confrontation between the two neighboring countries that demand scrutiny is the growing arms race in the region, featuring regional and global powers. Also significant, both during and after the conflict, was the considerable role played by hundreds of millions of Indians and Pakistanis on social media, largely amplifying dominant state narratives. Finally, there’s the question of how both governments – Modi’s BJP and Pakistan’s ‘hybrid plus’ regime – will instrumentalize the heightened nationalist fervor to further their own ends. Join us for a special lecture by Professor Aasim Sajjad Akhtar to take stock of what has transpired and what we can expect to follow.
This session is free and open to all. Just visit the venue to attend it.
