Universities are meant to be centers of innovation, debate, and critical inquiry. Yet when we look at higher education in Pakistan — particularly in the social sciences — a troubling question arises: are we truly advancing knowledge, or merely reproducing it?

This session will explore the current state of research in Pakistan’s universities, the challenges of originality, the pressure to publish without impact, and the disconnection between academic work and the real needs of society. At the same time, it will ask what it would take to cultivate a culture of genuine scholarship, creativity, and critical thinking that can place Pakistan’s academia on the global map.
