A Nobel Exile: Abdus Salam’s Physics, Faith, and Global Vision
The Pak-ICTP Alumni Society and the ICTP Global Science Portal present a special lecture reflecting on the life, ideas and enduring legacy of Dr. Abdus Salam, Pakistan’s only Nobel Laureate in Physics and one of the most influential scientific minds of the twentieth century.
Delivered by Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, a physicist who had the privilege of working with Salam, this talk revisits the remarkable journey of a scientist whose groundbreaking contributions to theoretical physics transformed our understanding of the fundamental forces of nature. Beyond his scientific achievements, Salam was also a passionate advocate for science in the developing world and the founding spirit behind the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste.
The lecture will explore Salam’s intellectual vision, his reflections on the relationship between science and faith, and the complex circumstances that eventually led to his estrangement from the country he loved. It will also examine his global mission to empower scientists from the Global South and to build institutions that could nurture scientific excellence beyond traditional centers of power.
This session is free and open to all. Just visit the venue to attend it.
