Iran Beyond the Headlines: People, Power and the Question of Legitimacy
In the midst of heightened regional tensions and competing global narratives, understanding Iran requires moving beyond simplified binaries of “regime vs people” or “liberation vs resistance.” What is the nature of the relationship between the Iranian state and its citizens? How do people engage with, support, critique, or negotiate power within a religious-political system?
This session draws on the speaker’s decade-long lived experience in Iran to explore the complex interplay between public participation, political authority, and social reality. It examines how governance is understood within Iran’s ideological framework, while also reflecting on how ordinary people perceive their role in shaping, sustaining, or challenging the system.
About the Speaker:
Ali Raza is a PhD scholar in Philosophy from Al-Mustafa International University Iran.
