Is corruption unquestionably evil? Or can any good come of it? Is it a drag on economic growth or can it help to grease the wheels of the economy? In Pakistan we specially struggle with the scourge of corruption but continue to suffer from it. In this talk, Dr. Uppal discusses related issues in plain terms based on his recent research. He talks about how business decisions are impacted by the incidence of corruption at the street level as well at the elite level. His research has implications for public policy in curbing corruption without an adverse impact on business sustainability and investment levels.

About the speaker:

Dr. Jamshed Uppal is Distinguished Professor of Research at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. He received his Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Michigan State University, USA, specializing in the corporate financial management area in which he also has extensive professional and business experience. Dr. Uppal has widely published in international academic journals with major focus on financial markets and institutions in the developing countries, including several papers on Pakistan’s financial sector. He is a frequent visitor to Pakistani universities and where he lectures and supervises academic research.
