How do authoritarian regimes reshape societies long after they have faded into history? What happens when politics, religion, and culture become intertwined in ways that transform the lives of ordinary people? And how do such periods continue to shape the present?

Join us for the launch of Purchhavaa’n, a novel by Akmal Shahzad Ghumman. Set against the backdrop of the transformative years of General Zia-ul-Haq’s rule, the novel explores one of the most consequential periods in Pakistan’s history – a time marked by profound political, social, religious, and cultural change.

Through its characters and narrative, Purchhavaa’n examines the forces that shaped society during this era, reflecting on the emergence of religious extremism, the impact of authoritarian governance, and the ways in which state policies, ideology, and social change influenced generations of Pakistanis.
