The Political Economy of Gender-Based Violence: Who Pays the Cost?

The Political Economy of Gender-Based Violence: Who Pays the Cost?

18 18 people viewed this event.

Gender-based violence is often viewed as a personal or criminal matter, but its consequences extend far beyond individual victims. It affects public health, education, labour force participation, economic productivity, and social cohesion, imposing significant costs on families, communities, institutions, and national development. Understanding these broader impacts requires looking beyond isolated incidents to the political, economic, legal, and social structures that shape vulnerability, accountability, and access to justice.

Why does gender-based violence persist despite legal reforms and public awareness campaigns? How do economic inequality, social norms, governance, and institutional responses influence both its prevalence and its consequences? Who bears the visible and hidden costs of violence, and what policies are needed to prevent it while ensuring protection, justice, and support for survivors?
