The Scientific Mind of Ibn Khaldun

This talk explores Ibn Khaldun not merely as a historian or philosopher, but as a thinker who sought to understand society through observation, causality, and recurring patterns. Long before the emergence of modern social science, Ibn Khaldun critically examined historical reports, rejected unreliable narratives, and searched for underlying causes of political and social change.

Drawing on the core ideas of Ibn Khaldun’s landmark work, the Muqaddimah, the talk examines whether he was attempting to construct a science of society without experiments or laboratories. The discussion traces his use of comparison, pattern recognition, and causal reasoning to explain the rise and decline of civilizations. It connects these ideas with modern approaches in systems thinking, complexity, and scientific inquiry, asking whether human communities can be studied with the same rigor as natural phenomena.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Saheeb Ahmed Kayani is a faculty member at the National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad. Trained in engineering and systems thinking, his interests span technology, tertiary education, intellectual history, and interdisciplinary scholarship. He is the author of the recently published book, A Reader’s Guide to Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah, a contemporary reader’s introduction designed to make the Muqaddimah accessible to modern audiences. His work explores the intersection of classical intellectual traditions and modern approaches to knowledge and society.
