In this session, the speaker is going to explore the historical and ideological roots and development of nationalism in Europe in the 19th century and shed light on its gradual spread in Asia and South Asia. The role of nationalism in anti-colonialist movements will also find some cursory reflections along with its successes, failures and remnant tendencies. Particularly, he will attempt to unfold the phenomena of identity crisis and certain possible ways out, say secular and inclusive nationalism, in Pakistan. Nationalism, ethnonationalism, cultural and linguistic nationalism also count as eminent dimensions to be sorted out, interpretted and understood. While concluding, he will try to see, if and how, nationalism – specifically ethno-linguistic nationalism may survive in liberal democracies and crisis-driven states and polities like Pakistan where economic growth and political stability have readily become a mega question side by side coming to terms with ethnic and linguistic nationalism and, somehow, move forward.
