Topology – A First Foray
Topology, in essence, is the study of geometric objects using ‘tame’ deformations. It deals with the properties of shapes that depend not on associated quantities such as lengths and angles, but on qualitative elements such as connectedness and compactness. Today, topology is the backbone of modern analysis and geometry.
Join us as we explore, informally, some of the basic ideas in topology and relate it to what we know from our earlier studies of geometry and calculus. Our discussion shall include the basic definitions and examples as well as some slight nods to differential and algebraic topology. This session assumes no prerequisites beyond high school mathematics.
About the Speaker:
Muhammad Haashir Ismail is a science enthusiast from Islamabad with a bachelor’s in mathematics and computer science from Virtual University and FAST-NUCES Islamabad respectively. His interests include geometry and its applications, e.g. computational complexity.
