The Story of Math: The Genius of The East (Screening + Interactive Open & LUMS Math Circles)
In this episode of The Story of Math, Marcus Du Sautoy tracks how, as the ancient Greece fell into decline and Europe fell into the Dark Ages, the development of maths was taken up with vigour in the East. He visits China and explores how maths helped build imperial China and was at the heart of such amazing feats of engineering as the Great Wall. In India, he discovers how the symbol for the number zero was invented and Indian mathematicians’ understanding of the new concepts of infinity and negative numbers. In the Middle East, he looks at the invention of the new language of algebra and the spread of eastern knowledge to the west through mathematicians such as Leonardo Fibonacci, creator of the Fibonacci Sequence.
The documentary screening will be followed by discussion and interactive LUMS Math Circle with Dr. Naqeeb ur Rehman, a mathematician with a PhD earned through the prestigious DAAD research program in Germany. His teaching expertise and interests extend from basic to the university levels, in the areas of algebra, knot theory, cellular automata, and mathematical philosophy. He has conducted math circles, seminars, and talks across various educational institutions. Besides, he also runs the OpenMathCircle YouTube channel and Facebook page.
