The Story of Math: The Language of the Universe (Screening + Interactive LUMS Math Circle)

156 156 people viewed this event.

In this documentary mathematician and the Oxford university professor Marcus du Sautoy explores the mathematics of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece, after showing how important and fundamental mathematics is to our lives.

In Egypt, he uncovers use of a decimal system based on ten fingers of the hand, while in former Mesopotamia he discovers that the way we tell the time today is based on the Babylonian Base 60 number system.

In Greece, he looks at the contributions of some of the giants of mathematics including Pythagoras, Plato, Euclid, Archimedes and Hypatia of Alexandria, who are credited with beginning the transformation of mathematics from a tool for counting into the analytical subject we know today.

The documentary screening will be followed by discussion and interactive LUMS Math Circle with Dr. Naqeeb ur Rehman, a mathematician with a PhD earned through the prestigious DAAD research program in Germany. His teaching expertise and interests extend from basic to the university levels, in the areas of algebra, knot theory, cellular automata, and mathematical philosophy. He has conducted math circles, seminars, and talks across various educational institutions.
