Is there an energy transition underway and what can we expect from it? In this talk, Dr. Asha Amirali will draw on ongoing fieldwork on the energy transition and the solar electricity boom in Pakistan. While there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about the development of renewable energy, a host of unresolved issues continues to confront us. Most importantly, if this development continues to take place within capitalist modes of organisation, establishing a new and more just ecological and social balance looks unlikely.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Asha Amirali is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Development Studies at the University of Bath. She is a political sociologist whose work has focused on understanding the operation of power and politics in Pakistan’s informal economy. Her current research explores the intersections of state, market, and informal institutions in energy transitions, with a focus on Pakistan.
