More in Common Than You Think: Pakistan-U.S. Relations Beyond Stereotypes

Pakistan and the United States share a long and complex history—one often clouded by misconceptions and stereotypes on both sides. But beyond the headlines and political narratives, there are ties that connect the two nations. This session aims to address common misunderstandings and highlight the shared values and mutual interests that often go unnoticed.

About the Guest Speaker:

Mr. Ken LeBlond, MPA, has worked for over 17 years in government and non-profit communications and international relations. Mr. LeBlond has extensive experience working with mainstream and alternative media outlets from the local, national and international levels. His clients have included government officials at all levels, non-profit leadership, and private organizations. He has also served as an academic director for an international exchange program for Pakistani undergraduate students. Mr. LeBlond traveled to Pakistan three times to convene exchange program alumni and to further business development for international programs. He has authored several articles for Pakistani media outlets about the U.S. and Pakistan and hosted a podcast focused on US-Pakistan relations. He has read over 50 books on Pakistan history and culture. Mr. LeBlond has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s in public administration from the University of Washington in Seattle.

About the Moderator:

Dr. Rizwan Ali Shinwari is an academic and researcher specializing in governance, public policy, and conflict studies. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Governance and Public Policy, NUML.

With a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from NUST, Dr. Shinwari’s research focuses on conflict resolution, policy dynamics, and governance frameworks. He has also been a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, contributing to international discussions on peacebuilding and policy reforms.

About the Co-Moderator:

M. Hussain Amin is a development professional and project management expert with experience in youth empowerment, education and social development initiatives.

He currently serves as the Program Director for the English Access Microscholarship Program, which provides 75 economically disadvantaged youth in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with training in English language, leadership, and confidence-building over a span of 360 hours across 24 months.

Moreover, he plays a key role in national policy discussions as the Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Poverty Alleviation & Social Safety at the Youth Parliament.
