Al-Ghazali and the Decline of Rational Thought? A Historical Inquiry
Al-Ghazali is often portrayed as the thinker who derailed the development of rational sciences in the Muslim world by challenging causality and promoting religious traditionalism. This view—shaped largely by early Western historians—has come under fresh scrutiny. In this session, we revisit Al-Ghazali’s ideas and influence to examine the validity of these claims and explore alternative perspectives on the historical trajectory of philosophy and science in Muslim societies.
