Declining Empire or Resurgent Imperialism
In attacking Venezeula and kidnapping President Nicolas Maduro, the Trump administration has set the stage for ever more audacious conduct on the global stage. The reality of the so-called liberal ‘rules-based order’ had already been laid bare by Washington’s backing of the Palestinian genocide, but the military action in Venezuela, Maduro’s kangaroo trial in US courts, the threats to annex Greenland and the clouds of ‘regime change’ hanging over Iran signify a complete remaking of international affairs.
How are we to understand Washington’s ever more aggressive posture? Does it indicate a resurgent US imperialism? Or it is in fact confirmation that the US empire is in terminal decline, economically second best to China, no longer able to rely on the hegemony of the US dollar and therefore forced to resort more and more to brazen force?
Even more specifically, what are the implications of the Trumpian order for Pakistan, especially given the chummy relationship that the US president has established with the current Sharif-Munir hybrid regime? What is the task of anti-imperialist forces in Pakistan today?
Join veteran leftist organizer Prof Aasim Sajjad Akhtar to seek answers to all these pressing questions.
