Encroachment and Deforestation: A Threat to Islamabad’s Ecosystem

Islamabad was envisioned as a city in harmony with nature, where green spaces, natural reserves and urban development could coexist. In recent years, however, growing concerns about encroachment on green areas and the loss of tree cover have sparked important public debates about the city’s ecological future.

This session examines how encroachment, deforestation and urban expansion affect Islamabad’s fragile ecosystem. The discussion will explore environmental, legal and planning perspectives, including the impact on biodiversity, air quality, water systems and public health. It will also consider how policy decisions, governance frameworks and civic responsibility shape the protection – or erosion – of urban green spaces.
