From Sets to Multisets: A New Perspective on Numbers

1022 1022 people viewed this event.

If you’re curious about the meaning of numbers like 2, you might be familiar with defining numbers using set theory, as discussed in previous lecture by the speaker “Multitudes, Magnitudes, and Numbers.” However, many students, especially in schools, struggle to connect set theory with everyday counting. Multisets (msets), or bags, align more closely with daily experiences but are rarely taught at the school level. This lecture introduces msets and aims to develop a new definition of numbers, providing a direct physical interpretation of negative numbers through antiparticles (matter vs antimatter), rather than abstract concepts like directions or debits.

By attending this lecture, you’ll gain a clear understanding of integers and their practical applications in describing the real world.
