Science Club: How did Human Language Evolve?

Language is what essentially sets us apart from all other species. This multidisciplinary session is about the origin and evolution of language among Homo sapiens. In particular, the following questions will be addressed in the light of recent findings in Evolutionary Biology, Paleontology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Genomics, Cognitive Science and Archaeological history.

  • Is language unique to Homo sapiens?
  • When and how did language begin?
  • Is there a language gene?
  • How did cognitive and language apparatus evolve?
  • Did all languages evolve from a single protolanguage?
  • What are future implications of language origin theories?

About the speaker

Rashid Saleem is an Associate Professor in English Language and Literature at a Federal College in F-10/4, Islamabad. His interests range from Philosophy, Literature, Education to Linguistics, Psychology, Neurology, Physics, Electronics, Maths and Computer Science.
