Humour For Harmony

From memes and reels to stand-up comedy and political satire, humour has become one of the most powerful and widespread forms of public expression in contemporary society. In Pakistan especially, comedy increasingly shapes how people discuss politics, identity, class, gender and everyday frustrations.

But what does comedy actually do to society? Does it challenge power or reinforce prejudice? Can humour create empathy and social connection, or does it too often become a tool for humiliation, polarization and punching down on vulnerable groups?

This session explores the evolving role of comedy in Pakistan’s cultural and digital landscape, examining how humour influences public opinion, collective behavior and social attitudes. Moving beyond entertainment alone, the conversation asks whether comedy can become a force for reflection, healing and positive social change in deeply divided times.
