Island Universes: An Introduction to Galaxies

In this talk, we will plumb the depths of the fascinating subject of galaxies, gigantic structures composed of stars, gas, dust and dark matter that are the building blocks of the universe on cosmological scales. Our Milky Way galaxy is only one among a hundred billion others in the observable universe. We will discuss how we came to discover that we are living inside a gigantic disk or galaxy, how other galaxies were discovered, how our galaxy and other galaxies formed, what is the shape and structure of various kinds of galaxies and many other exciting topics. Buckle up for a whirlwind tour of one of the most fascinating topics in astrophysics and learn more about our “island universe” in the cosmos at large.

About the Speaker:

Shahryar Khan is a graduate of physics from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad and PhD Physics candidate at University of Houston, USA. His research interests range from cosmology to condensed matter physics to chaos theory. He is also deeply interested in pure mathematics, philosophy and artificial intelligence.
