In recent years, Kathak has seen a resurgence in Pakistan — a promising development for classical dance. However, much of this revival is marked by a lack of understanding of the art form’s rich theoretical foundations and technical depth. Often misinterpreted or reduced to superficial performance, Kathak is far more than a series of graceful movements; it is a profound medium of storytelling, discipline, and self-expression.

This session aims to explore Kathak not merely as a dance, but as a classical art form rooted in tradition, philosophy, and practice. It invites audiences to distinguish between popular dance and classical form — both beautiful in their own right — and to appreciate the value of Kathak as a life skill, a cultural inheritance, and a serious art form deserving of respect and accurate representation.

About the Speaker:

Zainab Dar is an educator, social activist, and women’s rights advocate with a deep commitment to using the arts as a means of empowerment and expression. As a dedicated Kathak practitioner and trainer, she works to preserve and promote this classical dance form in contemporary Pakistan. Zainab combines her passion for education, activism, and performance to create inclusive spaces where culture and advocacy intersect — especially for women and marginalized communities.
