Liberal Democracy at a Crossroads: Populism, Neoliberalism and the Future of Democracy Worldwide
The number of liberal democracies is declining globally; however, the number of electoral democracies remains almost the same. The main causes for this decline in liberal components of democracy are rising populism, inequality, protectionist economic policies, and the rise of authoritarian regimes, especially in China. This session will explore the complex intersection of political economy, populist movements, and the global political and economic order, and how these forces are reshaping liberal democratic systems worldwide. Join us for a discussion on the future of democracy, the threats it faces, and potential paths forward in an increasingly polarized world.
