Not Just Nehru and Jinnah: The Complexity of Partition of India
The Partition of India in 1947 remains one of the most traumatic and contested events of the 20th century. While dominant narratives often portray it as an inevitable result of irreconcilable Hindu-Muslim differences, alternative perspectives argue that Partition was a politically orchestrated catastrophe—engineered by colonial powers and facilitated by elite actors on both sides.
This session invites participants to explore the complexity of Partition beyond the familiar binaries. By examining a spectrum of historical facts and lesser-heard voices, we seek to uncover the deeper forces—political, colonial, and ideological—that shaped this pivotal moment.
