Our Life, Our Story: How Medicine, Biology and Culture Connect
What makes us who we are? Our bodies carry not only the marks of biology and evolution, but also the influences of culture, environment and the communities we belong to. From the food we eat and the diseases we fight to the traditions we inherit and the ecosystems we shape, the story of human life is one of constant interaction between nature and culture.
Led by a biologist, this session explores the fascinating connections between medicine, biology and cultural practices, revealing how scientific understanding can deepen our appreciation of human diversity, health and shared heritage. How do biology and culture influence one another? What can medicine tell us about our past and present? And how can an interdisciplinary perspective help us address the challenges of the future?
About the Speaker:
Rui Diogo is a researcher, speaker and writer. He is renowned for addressing broader scientific questions and societal issues using empirical data from many different fields of science. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and a PhD at the University of Liege, Belgium. This was followed up with a postdoc. at King’s College London, and a Master’s and PhD at the Department of Biology at George Washington University, US. A wanderer as well as a wonderer, he has conducted research, given speeches, and travelled to more than 120 countries. He is the author of more than 150 papers and 20 books, including: “Learning and Understanding Human Anatomy and Pathology,” – a textbook that is used in several medical schools globally – “Evolution Driven by Organismal Behavior” – listed amongst the ten best evolutionary books of 2017 – and “Meaning of Life, Human Nature, and Delusions.”
About the Moderator:
Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Rashid Sherkoti has doctorate in Biotechnology and is teaching as an Assistant Professor at the Virtual University.
