Return to Sender: Women of Color in Colonial Postcards & the Politics of Representation is a short documentary that begins with an examination of colonial photography and a close reading of the representation of the feminine through an Orientalist lens. The film then invites contemporary South Asian women to subvert such frames.

About the Director:

Mara Ahmed is a multimedia artist who has lived and been educated in Belgium, Pakistan and the US. She produces documentaries, soundscapes, and artwork that trespass political borders and challenge colonial logics. Her films have been broadcast on PBS (America’s Public Broadcasting System) and screened at international film festivals. Her latest documentary, Return to Sender, was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts grant and premiered in 2023. Her website is MaraAhmedStudio.com
