Sultan Bahu: Universal Humanism and the Search for the Self
Featuring a live musical rendition of Kalam-e-Bahu by Naveed Bahu (Son of late Iqbal Bahu), accompanied by Athar Zia (Harmonium Maestro, Singer and Musician). Moderated by Tariq Bhatti (Writer, Cultural Critic and Punjabi Activist).
Four centuries after his lifetime, Sultan Bahu continues to be celebrated not only as one of the greatest Punjabi poets, but also as a thinker whose writings speak to questions of identity, compassion, human dignity, and the search for meaning. His poetry has transcended generations, inspiring readers, musicians, and scholars across South Asia.
This session will examine the broader philosophical and humanistic themes that run through his poetry – love, humility, self, equality and the rejection of prejudice and social divisions. Tariq Bhatti will introduce the historical context in which Sultan Bahu lived, the enduring relevance of his thought in today’s polarized world, and the role of poetry as a vehicle for ethical reflection and cultural dialogue.
Complementing the introduction will be live musical performance of selected verses, offering audiences an opportunity to experience one of South Asia’s richest poetic traditions through both conversation and music.
This session is free and open to all. Just visit the venue to attend it.
