The Crisis of Higher Education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Public universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are facing a deepening crisis marked by financial instability, governance challenges and declining academic standards. Delayed salaries, administrative irregularities, shrinking research opportunities and deteriorating institutional support have created growing uncertainty for both faculty and students.

Beyond immediate financial concerns, the crisis raises broader questions about the future of higher education itself: What happens to a society when its universities weaken? How do unstable institutions affect research, critical thinking, innovation and the prospects of young people?

This session examines the structural and policy challenges confronting higher education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while exploring issues of accountability, sustainability and the urgent need for reform to protect the future of public universities and academic life in Pakistan.
