What if power does not merely reside in governments, prisons or institutions, but shapes the very way we think, behave and understand ourselves? What if the most effective forms of control are not imposed by force but internalized through everyday practices and social norms?

Join us exploration of the ideas of the twentieth century’s most influential philosopher and social theorist, Michel Foucault. From prisons and hospitals to schools, workplaces, and the modern state, Foucault challenged conventional understandings of power by arguing that it operates through subtle networks of discipline, surveillance, and knowledge.

This session will examine some of Foucault’s most enduring concepts, including the relationship between power and truth, the role of institutions in shaping individual lives, and the ways in which modern societies produce particular kinds of subjects and identities. It will also explore the continuing relevance of his ideas in an age of digital technologies, social media, data collection, and expanding systems of surveillance.

Whether one agrees with Foucault’s conclusions or not, his work continues to provoke fundamental questions about freedom, authority, justice, and the nature of the modern self.
