The Social Case of Art

Is art merely a form of expression, or does it carry a deeper responsibility toward society? Can literature, theatre, film and storytelling challenge injustice, reshape public imagination and provoke social change?

This session explores the social case of art, the idea that artistic expression is not only aesthetic but also deeply political, cultural and ethical. From poetry and performance to cinema and narrative, art has long served as a mirror to society as well as a force that questions power, exposes contradictions and gives voice to the unheard.

Renowned Pakistani actor, poet, screenwriter, storyteller and artist Adeel Afzal will reflect on the role of art in confronting social realities and shaping collective consciousness. Drawing from his own creative journey across multiple artistic forms, he will discuss how artists bring the delicate balance between creativity, truth and social responsibility.

The conversation will be moderated by Rakia Maryam, guiding an engaging exploration of how art can move beyond entertainment to become a powerful medium of reflection, resistance and transformation.
